West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar has made headlines in the world of hip hop. On Big Sean's song "Control" Lamar spits lyrics that had some of his fellow rappers ready to get in the studio as early as 7 a.m. Some took offense to his lyrics and took it as a dis, especially from those whose names were mentioned. However, there were some who fully understood just where he was coming from.
In the song he raps "I'm usually homeboys with the same n****s I'm rhyming with/ But this is hip hop and them n****s should know what time it is/ And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale/ Pusha T, Meek Mill, Asap Rocky, Drake/ Big Sean, Jay Electron, Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all but I'm tryna murder you n****s/ Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n****s/ They don't wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you n****s/ What is competition?"
"I'm Makaveli's offspring I'm the King of New York/ King of the coast/ One hand I juggle them both," Lamar added.
Pusha T responded via Twitter saying he heard Lamar loud and clear. Missy thanked the Comptom rapper for reminding rappers to be lyrical with substance again. Other rappers like Fab and Joe Budden didn't take Lamar's lyrics to kindly. Budden reminded the New Yorkers that Lamar who is from Cali proclaimed himself the king of New York.
"A Cali n***a just said he's the King of New York & u n****s so f*****g worried about your relationships, y'all make me sick," Where's all NY?" Budden said via Twitter.
Lupe whose name was not mentioned also chimed in on the rapper's lyrics.
"Y'all know y'all easily impressed. But so low you need a shovel to get at it," Lupe tweeted.
In response to the criticism Lamar tweeted that he was just reminding rappers that hip hop is a competition and he's here to compete.
"No rap beef. Just lyrical challenge. As it should be," he concluded.
When hip hop began it was about a movement then it became about competition. A battle of words. These days no stories are being told just beefing over nonsense and rapping about living the lavish life, sex, drugs and partying.
Kendrick's verse just made some of these artists wake up!
