Will Rosa Parks Be The New Face On $20 Bill?

Civil Rights Activist Rosa Parks who is mostly known for not giving up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 could be the new face on the $20 bill.

According to Eurweb, a group called Women of 20s feel it's time for Andrew Jackson to say good-bye and they are campaigning for a historic female to be the face of the $20 bill. 

Barbara Ortiz Howard, the founder of the group said this is a simple change and doesn't require an act of Congress. She didn't say who in particular should be the face of the bill but she said she loves them all.

“You can’t help but love these women and what they persevered to do for us on our behalf, as a people and a nation,” Howard said.

Ortiz wanted to start this movement because she realized that the only piece of money bearing a woman’s face is the dollar coin, which bears the likeness of Sacagawea – the only female member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Susan B. Anthony was the face of the dollar coin beforehand.

“I thought that was kind of an odd omission, considering that we are 50% of the population or more, and that we are vital to the economy and everything else in life,“ Howard said. “We have an opportunity for a rich history lesson every day as we use our money.”


“We’re hoping that they will hear America clamor for a change on the $20 bill,“ she added.

Along with Rosa Parks who died in 2005 other candidates for the face of the $20 include Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt.
