Female rapper and actress Lil Mama did an interview with The Hollie Wood and friends show. On the show she discussed how she feels about females in hip hop, Nicki Minaj and her audition for the TLC biopic.
Lil Mama said she made a call to MC Lyte regarding auditions. Mc Lyte made a few calls and finally Claude Brooks who reached out to the casting director got Lil Mama an audition. She said she had three or four auditions but trying to get into the first audition was like trying to get on stage while Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' performance!
Lil Mama made her debut with the hit "Lip Gloss" but she will forever be known for her spontaneous entrance while Jay and Keys were performing "Empire State of Mind" at the Video Music Awards years prior!
The TLC biopic star went on to say rapper Nicki Minaj should be doing all she can to break up what she like to call the boys club, referring to hip hop. She said she hears Minaj say she's doing this for women but she doesn't see her putting any women on.
"It's a lot of underground women who are trying to break through, but on a mainstream level the only person that I really hear on the radio is Nicki Minaj," Lil Mama explained.
She also said she feels it's time for female MC's to really start sticking together and start putting out some music.
"I don't see her on tracks with other women that are current. I don't see her embracing any other women," she added.
Lil Mama is right about one thing Nicki Minaj is the only mainstream female rapper that gets acknowledged. Other female rappers have stated that they wouldn't mind working with Nicki but we have yet to see that happen.
