Recently, it was reported that members Lydia Mitchell, Priyanka Banks, MeToya Monroe, Adrene Ashford, and Shanna McCormick were also expelled from their chapter Delta Sigma Theta.
Due to the negative portrayal shown on the show, as well as, the high volume of back lash from sororities the members were expelled and suspended. After the first episode of "Sorority Sisters" a petition to end the show was started. Despite the required signatures that were reached VH1 refused to pull the plug due to high ratings. However, VH1 finally decided to cancelled the show.
The organization made the announcement on their website confirming the expulsion date effective on their Founder’s Day, January 13, 2015.
The organizations details what the expulsion means for the former members:
“All rights and privileges as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. are rescinded for all individuals listed in this section of the website.
For those who don't understand what that means, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Marks are the exclusive property of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. The right to wear, use, or display any items or merchandise with any Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Marks (“paraphernalia”) is granted to those in good standing only.
Therefore, all individuals listed in this section must refrain from wearing any paraphernalia or using any merchandise that includes references to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., its symbols or logos. Wearing or using Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. paraphernalia is knowingly engaging in fraudulent misrepresentation and impersonation, i.e., conveying that you are a member of the organization.
Furthermore, attending “Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Only” activities or otherwise engaging in any conduct or activities that indicate membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is prohibited. Should any individual fail to abide by the aforementioned guidelines and/or fraudulently misrepresent her status as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., you will be subject to legal action taken against her by the organization.”
Last Friday VH1 aired the final three episodes of "Sorority Sisters".
While April and Joy have been suspended until 2016, the Delta Sigma Theta members were expelled. Do you think it is fair for April and Joy to be suspended? Should they too have been expelled?
